Watching the Lighting Designer (LD)

This was interesting because we are learning to hack things with Arduino.

Scotland: discussed sound and lighting for concerts with my brother-in-law. It may help later. He also does broadcasting, which reminds me of streaming. He will introduce me to people who project video onto buildings, trees etc. Also he mentioned an event where gas pipes were laid just below the surface of the Green Loch, then the gas emissions inflamed.

Elsewhere there were thousands of fairy lights laid on the valley floor. The following links include similar works. Lighting design for concerts and theatre blurs the boundary with digital art and we can learn from adjacent disciplines, e.g. go to the back of a concert and ask to speak to the LD (Lighting Designer).

Friday 9
Went to see Limelight Event Services and their work. Using them is food for thought, if not on my MA, in the future. They gave me these links:

My brother gave me the domain name www.clairealonge.com as a birthday present and I can implement the theory I learned last year, and start to think how to fashion a web presence.

Saturday 10
Spent 6 idyllic hours by Loch Ness, with my siblings and their families. This loch figures strongly in the theme of my project, since it has emotive early memories for me of picnics. Made some clips, e.g. ripples over submerged rocks; sunlight dancing on the view of the 32 mile stretch of water.

Sunday 11
Today Decode closes. I have seen things which consolidate my theory that digital art blurs the boundaries with light shows. I was not aware that visual displays are used nowadays in concerts, e.g. video composites, and a live camera to composite low opacity footage of the singer on top of the video. This had a mirror-like effect but did not intrude on the privacy of the portrait subject.

Friday 16
Met the creator of 3 of the above pieces. There was a projection on a bike with an animation showing on a large screen behind the bike. He also does mapping on buildings with a second sequence running in the windows. In addition, he projected faces onto trees, e.g. the Ness Islands project. People walked on the path and it seemed as if the trees were talking to them.
